How the procedure works

A dental hygiene appointment usually lasts 45–60 minutes and is completely painless. It begins with an initial consultation and an assessment of the condition of your teeth and gums, during which the dental hygienist identifies problem areas and those requiring extra attention.

We then use ultrasound to remove tartar, which builds up both above and below the gums and cannot be removed with a standard toothbrush. The ultrasound waves gently remove the hard deposits without damaging the tooth enamel.

This is followed by manual cleaning of the spaces between the teeth using specialised instruments, and the removal of staining caused by coffee, tea, red wine or smoking.

These stains are removed using air-flow technology with a gentle stream of water and a special powder.

Finally, the teeth are polished with a special polishing paste, which smooths the surface of the enamel so that bacteria and plaque do not adhere to it for as long. Fluoridation strengthens the tooth enamel and creates a protective barrier against tooth decay.

The treatment also includes personalised guidance on proper tooth brushing. We’ll recommend suitable toothbrushes, dental floss, interdental brushes and daily care techniques tailored to your specific needs.

We’ll show you how to brush and floss correctly so that you can keep your teeth healthy between visits.

If you’re also planning to have your teeth whitened, a dental hygiene session is the ideal first step, as it removes debris and allows the whitening gel to work evenly.

For patients considering orthodontic treatment, we recommend a dental hygiene session both before and during treatment with braces. This ensures clean teeth and healthy gums throughout the entire period you wear your braces.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Professional teeth cleaning is the key to a healthy smile. Below you’ll find answers to our clients’ most frequently asked questions, which will help you prepare for your appointment.

How often should I visit the dentist?

Ideally every 6 months. For patients with periodontitis or a significant build-up of tartar, we recommend more frequent check-ups. Regular dental hygiene helps to prevent tooth decay and gum inflammation, which often develop without any painful symptoms.

Can dental hygiene help with bad breath?

Yes. Removing tartar, plaque and bacteria from between the teeth often leads to a significant improvement in breath.

What’s more, we’ll recommend suitable home care products to help you keep your breath fresh all day long.

Is dental hygiene suitable for children as well?

Absolutely. Our dental hygienists work gently with children and teach them good oral care habits from a very young age.

Thanks to their friendly approach, children learn that a visit to the dental hygienist needn’t be something to dread, but rather a natural part of a healthy lifestyle.

Does dental hygiene remove staining from teeth?

Yes, during the polishing process, surface stains caused by coffee, tea, wine or smoking are removed.

After the treatment, your teeth will be visibly brighter and smoother. Regular dental hygiene not only protects your health but also improves the appearance of your smile.
